Meet John - Business Analyst

"I know that the ventures I work on are helping to build a sustainable future. Helping to bring that future about gives you a good feeling."

Business Analyst

  • Location: Houston, Texas, USA
  • University: Cambridge University, UK
  • Studied: Natural Sciences/International Relations
  • Joined Shell: September 1998

Why did you join Shell?

There were several reasons why I wanted to work for Shell. One was my interest in economics and the fact that a career in finance in an international company like Shell could offer me a huge range of opportunities.

My masters in International Relations reflects my interest in issues such as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development, an area which I'm now well placed to support in one of Shell's new energy businesses.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

After graduating with degree in Natural Sciences, and then a Masters in International Relations, I started working for Shell in the oil products business management accounting offices in London and Manchester, before moving to Amsterdam in June 2000 to start work as a business analyst with Hydrogen. Since then, I've moved to Houston, going via Vancouver in Canada on secondment to one of Shell Hydrogen's investments.

Working as part of a small global team, I have a lot of responsibility and deal with people on all levels - reporting to the CFO of Shell Hydrogen and regularly contact with the CEO. I also write materials that are seen by the Shell Group's management board.

My day-to-day tasks have taken in all manner of things and relate to all aspects of the Hydrogen business - from carrying out valuations on the specific ventures to developing large business plans. Currently, I'm co-ordinating finance operations for Hydrogen in the US. I also lead the competitive intelligence function for Shell Hydrogen globally.

It's interesting work and very rewarding - in short, a unique job. I've travelled quite a lot to work on some of our business opportunities, a great chance to see other cities and experience different ways of doing things, as well as gain great work exposure.

What do you like most about the job?

I think it must be the freedom I get. My team values action and end results such that you are relatively free to do what it takes to deliver your projects on time. Within reason, you can be creative about how to achieve that result. It's a big responsibility, but I like the fact that people trust you to do things your own way and primarily judge you on your results.

What are your future career plans?

I value working in businesses contributing to Shell's commitment to sustainable development as I'm convinced that one person can make that difference. Continuing to combine SD into the some of the many finance roles that exist in Shell is one clear aim that I have. Knowing that I'm making an impact on all our futures right here and right now is something you can't put a value on. I want to make sure that continues.
