Meet Andrew

“I was told that I would have real projects to work on from day one utilizing cutting-edge technology – and, when I started work, I did.”

Reservoir Engineer

  • Location: Houston, TX, USA
  • Studied: Science and Petroleum Engineering
  • Where: Colorado School of Mines – Golden, CO
  • Joined Shell: August 2001

Why did you join Shell?

I joined Shell for a couple of reasons – my school was technically focused, so there was a technical excellence factor that I considered, as well as during the recruiting process, I noticed that Shell was interested in hiring people, not just filling jobs. The Shell Recruitment Day was unique and convinced me that Shell seeks people with multiple talents beyond the technical arena.

The whole ‘steer your career’ mentality that Shell promotes and the potential for global opportunity were major factors in making my decision as well.

But, I would say the most important reason is that I was told that I would have real projects to work on from day one utilizing cutting-edge technology – and, when I started work, I did.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

Being part of Shell Deepwater Services is unique. I wear multiple hats on any given day – reservoir engineer, new professional, cross-discipline interface, and customer interface. I get to work with a variety of people and have the opportunity to establish and expand professional networks and gain knowledge from their diverse backgrounds and expertise. I have had the opportunity to interact with senior management and develop paths for all the Shell businesses through various events. I also assist new professionals through on-boarding, provide resources to bring them up to speed, and help organize local activities to encourage work/life balance.

What do you like most about the job?

I like the fact we are involved on multiple teams and projects at one time, which allow me to become very familiar with the Exploration and Production business. My current job as an exploration reservoir engineer is to devise new concepts and invent new ways to solve problems to meet the needs of each project and region.

In addition, I am encouraged to focus on personal development and recognize the types of work that will fulfill the competencies I need to progress my career. And with world-class training readily available, Shell supports you maintaining a standard of technical excellence.

As long as this experience continues to grow, I’ll definitely want to be a part of Shell. There are many facets of the businesses I want to explore outside of reservoir engineering such as identifying global business opportunities and interfacing with foreign governments and NGOs.
