pedaling for conservation

More than 800 bicycle riders pedaled 150 miles over two days in October 2010 as part of the Shell-sponsored Bike Around the Bay, benefiting the Galveston Bay Foundation.

Founded in 1987, the Galveston Bay Foundation works to preserve, protect and enhance Galveston Bay, one of the world’s most productive estuaries.

The Galveston Bay system has lost more than 35,000 acres of wetlands during the last 50 years, and the foundation supports restoration projects to restore those lost wetlands.

The two-day annual bike ride showcases the natural beauty of Galveston Bay. Riders start at Fort Anahuac Park in Anahuac, Texas, and continue along a scenic route to Galveston for an overnight stay. Day 2 takes riders along the west side of Galveston Bay and finishes outside of Baytown, Texas.
