The Taylors Depart from Houston
As part of their latest record-setting drive across the 48 contiguous states, Helen and John Taylor – known as the world’s most fuel-efficient couple holding 89 world records – are using their experience and the Shell Smarter Driving Program to break the only 48-state fuel efficiency record that they have NOT attempted. As the current diesel and gasoline record-holders, the Taylors kicked off their ultimate fuel efficiency road trip Houston this past weekend to see how far they can go in a hybrid vehicle.
In August 2011, the Taylors completed their 23-day, 48 contiguous U.S. state tour and achieved an astounding average of 64.42 miles per gallon in an unmodified, non-hybrid gasoline vehicle by using tips from the Shell Smarter Driving program and using Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines exclusively along their route. This year, they also put Pennzoil Platinum 0W20 under the hood, a full synthetic lubricant designed for hybrid engines.
The Taylors’ 2011 achievement was more than 50 percent greater than the Environmental Protection Agency’s estimated highway fuel economy for the vehicle they drove and surpassed the minimum requirement of 54.5 mpg announced by the government for passenger vehicles to achieve by 2025.
Shell and the Taylors believe that everyone can make a difference and push their boundaries of fuel efficiency by following a simple “M.A.P.” to Smarter Driving, which includes:
- Maintenance: Perform smart maintenance before you drive
- Actions: Practice smart behaviors while you’re behind the wheel
- Products: Purchase smart products and services at the right price without sacrificing quality
Research shows that consumers are already taking steps to save money, and most are looking for ways on how to save fuel, for more information on Smarter Driving and the Taylors, visit: shell.us/smarterdriving.
