Refinery Odor Update—Incident Over
The piece of equipment that caused the odor has been safely isolated and shut down, the odor has dissipated and there is no further flaring. As a precaution, Shell dispatched the refinery’s community air sampling team to various locations in Martinez to ensure there was no impact beyond the odor itself. The team reported back no harmful readings detected.
The exact cause of the odor is under investigation. The substance was a propane/butane mixture similar to what you would find in a barbecue. The equipment will not be utilized again until the issue is corrected.
We are grateful to the outstanding emergency response personnel for their quick response to this issue. We also want to take this opportunity to apologize to our neighbors who smelled the odor. It is our aim to run the facility in a way that does not impact the public. When we fall short of that goal, as we have today and yesterday, it is something we take very seriously. We appreciate the patience of the community while this situation was addressed.
