Baseball Anyone?

I love working at Shell, but I will confess that I love baseball more. On a week when most are thinking football, I thought I had died and gone to baseball-geek heaven when I had the opportunity to moderate a conversation with Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane and Mets VP Paul DePodesta on Monday night. Beane and DePodesta were memorialized in Michael Lewis’ book, Moneyball, The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, and were played by Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in the movie of the same name. We had a great conversation with terrific questions from the audience on topics ranging from the economics of the game to leadership philosophy.

Beane and DePodesta’s work provides a model for people in virtually any field about being boldly contrarian.  I am grateful to be in a workplace that sees the value of thinking a bit differently about addressing both business and societal challenges.  And like every good ball player, we at Shell desire–first and foremost– to be safe.
