Shell Deer Park spurs interest in High School program
Shell Deer Park employees recently participated in the Milby High School Petroleum and Industry Career Fair, an annual event which is geared to encourage high school students to consider technical career opportunities in energy.
Promoting Milby’s specialized Process Technology Program
Located in Houston’s East End, minutes from the Ship Channel, Milby offers a Process Technology curriculum which gives students deeper insight into the work environment at manufacturing facility. Shell employees (pictured below) – Ginger Saxman, Mickey Pedneau, Alex Rivera, Miguel Hernandez, and Sergio Trevino – reinforced the messages about the high-demand, dynamic, and lucrative jobs available at the Deer Park refinery and chemical plant.
Pedneau, a Learning Advisor at Shell Deer Park, managed the Shell booth and shared that the team truly enjoyed interacting with the Milby students. An important part of the conversation was illuminating the vast range of opportunities in the refining and petrochemical industry available to the students if they made the right educational choices.
“We stressed the importance of continuing their education past the high school level and completing at a minimum a two-year Associates Degree to enter the industry. We also informed the students of the other job opportunities that are possible with higher degrees. Milby offers dual credit courses for Process Technology and we had a large number of students sign up for further information to enter the P-Tech courses."
