Shell Deer Park Achieves Significant Milestone with Responsible Care® Certification for Refinery; Reinforces continued commitment to community and industry neighbors

Achieving these certifications provides external validation that we’re on the right path toward our aspiration of becoming the best health, safety, security and environmental performer in the industry.

January 11, 2011 – Shell Deer Park recently achieved another milestone in its quest for excellence in site management. In October, the British Standards Institute approved re-certification for the site’s combined quality, health, safety, security and environmental management systems, and added Responsible Care® RC14001 certification for the site’s refinery for the first time.

The site’s Responsible Care® RC14001 certification is the first one to be received among all Shell and Motiva refineries in the U.S.
Shell Deer Park includes a fully integrated refinery and chemical plant, which until a few years ago were separate entities with separate management teams and systems. When the site was unified under one management structure, the two management systems were combined as well.

These management systems govern many areas, including quality, health, safety, security and environmental stewardship, and are evaluated by an independent third party against rigid standards set by the International Standards Organization and the American Chemistry Council. This oversight process enables a disciplined approach to managing business risks, which means rigorous controls around preventing incidents such as environmental impacts and safety violations.

The importance of these management systems is reflected in the site’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Commitment & Policy Statement, available on the web site – www.shell.us/deerpark.

"Earning the trust of our neighbors regarding our 'People and Planet' focus – doing no harm – is important to us as a longstanding community and industry partner," said Mark Byrd, site general manager. "Achieving these certifications provides external validation that we’re on the right path toward our aspiration of becoming the best health, safety, security and environmental performer in the industry."

Among the industry, the certifications are known as ISO9001:2008, which governs quality management systems, ISO14001:2004, which governs environmental management systems, and RC14001 – which is the Responsible Care® certification covering all aspects including health, safety, security and environment. More information on Responsible Care® can be found here.

The Shell Deer Park refinery is also certified as an OSHA VPP (Volunteer Protection Programs) and Star Program site. More information on the two OSHA programs can be found here.

Background: The British Standards Institute (BSI) is a global auditing company that provides independent, third-party certification of management systems. BSI will perform audits of Shell Deer Park’s manufacturing management systems every six months to verify continual improvement and ongoing conformance to the specific requirements. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a non-governmental organization that develops and publishes international standards.
