Harvey Gulf and Shell Vessel Tour
Shell and Harvey Gulf International Marine (Harvey Gulf) held a vessel naming competition throughout the Northwest Arctic Borough (NWAB) in December of 2011. Rita won with her submission of “Sisuaq” (beluga). During the Regional’s Basket Ball Game in Kotzebue, AK on March 3rd, Shell and Harvey Gulf announced Rita as the winner in front of a packed gym. Along with a $5,000 dollar grant to the Inupiat language and culture program and a $500 dollar gift card to the local store, Rita was also given an all expenses paid trip to New Orleans.
Rita and her Aunt Janet departed on their journey April 9th, after several layovers, an overnight in Anchorage (Where they dined at Simons and Seaforts with Shell and Harvey Gulf and tried calamari for the 1st time!), and approximately 4,000 miles the pair went from a town with a population of 400 to a city of over 350,000.
Upon arriving in New Orleans they were met by their New Orleans tour guide, Jason Schieffler with Harvey Gulf, who picked up the group in a white stretch limo.
Over the next two days Rita and Janet, accompanied by Jason and Michelle, experienced the French Quarter, the Audubon Zoo and Aquarium, the French Market, participated in a Swamp Tour, witnessed the beauty of the Mississippi River, and sampled plenty of local Cajun cuisine, including beignets from the infamous Café Du Monde. Rita, having never been out of Alaska, was in constant awe and continuously expressed how everything she saw was new and amazing.
During the trip Rita and Janet were given the opportunity to meet and dine with several Harvey Gulf and Shell employees, including: Shane J. Guidry, Chairman & CEO Harvey Gulf; Dan Flynn, Vice President – Shell Logistics & Infrastructure Upstream Americas; Robert (Bob) L. Guinn, III, President of Harvey Gulf; and Neal Hennegan, Consultant – Shell Upstream Americas Logistics.
The trip concluded on the third day with a tour of Harvey Gulfs New Orleans office and the “Sisuaq”. Harvey Gulf President, Robert (Bob) L. Guinn, III personally escorted Rita, Janet, and Michelle on the two hour drive to and from New Orleans to Port Fourchon to tour the vessel. The vessel tour ended with Rita signing her John Hancock on one of the vessel doors. That night, as a finale to the trip, the pair (Rita and Janet) attended an NBA game with box seats courtesy of Harvey Gulf between the Utah Jazz and the New Orleans Hornets.
On April 14th, Rita and Janet, accompanied by Michelle began the long journey home with many wonderful memories of a trip that will not soon be forgotten!
