On a week when most are thinking football, I thought I had died and gone to baseball-geek heaven when I had the opportunity to moderate a conversation with Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane and Mets VP Paul DePodesta on Monday night. Beane and DePodesta were memorialized in Michael Lewis’ book, Moneyball, The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, and were played by Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in the movie of the same name. We had a great conversation with terrific questions from the audience on topics ranging from the economics of the game to leadership philosophy.

    Earlier today, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) announced that Shell is now permitted to move forward with initial drilling activities in the Beaufort Sea.

    Royal Dutch Shell (“Shell”) is engaged in a multi-year drilling programme to explore for new oil & gas resources in high-potential blocks in offshore Alaska.     The incident previously reported at Shell Martinez is over. Shell emergency response personnel immediately addressed the issue.

    Residents on the Pacheco Blvd. side of the refinery may be smelling a propane/sour type odor. We have identified the source of this and are shutting down the associated equipment while we address it. There is no need to shelter-in-place. As a precaution, a Community Warning System Level 1 is in place. No injuries have been reported.

    We activated the refinery’s emergency operations center early this morning in order to manage any potential complications related to the tsunami forecast. While no major impact is anticipated, out of an abundance of caution we evacuated our non-essential personnel working at the refinery’s wharf. Shell has a comprehensive system in place for responding to natural disasters, protecting our people and securing our assets. While we don’t anticipate any disruption in our operations, we are taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our people and equipment. - Steve

    We had a great meeting of our Community Advisory Panel tonight. Thanks to all who came and all who presented. We had apresentation on the city’s general plan from CAP Member Igor Skaredoff; a presentation about our new Shell Martinez website and blog from Erin Hallissy; an update on our crude tank project from Gordon Johnson and a great discussion on the CAP’s recent trip to hear former Shell President John Hofmeister speak in Sacramento. We also had our usual refinery report from Shell General Manager Alicia Izarraraz, and our report on the Hazardous Materials Commission from CAP member Ralph Sattler.

Before that, I had a 25-year career as a newspaper reporter and editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, where I was based in central Contra Costa County, and at the Contra Costa Times, where I primarily worked in the Martinez News Bureau.

I am most proud of starting the annual Shell Martinez 5k Run for Education, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Martinez schools.
