Steve Lesher, Public Affairs Manager at the Shell Martinez Refinery, said Shell – the Run’s major sponsor – is proud to support the Martinez Education Foundation, which uses the Run proceeds to give grants to Martinez schoolteachers for needed technology and other equipment in classrooms.

“It’s awesome to see the record-breaking fundraising and all the participants for this very fun and very worthwhile event,” Lesher said. “We have more than achieved our goal this year to make the 2014 Run for Education the best one ever.”

On a beautiful, warm fall day, many of the 784 participants ran, while others walked the route that goes through downtown Martinez. More than 100 people ran the 10k route that spun off from the 5k and went up the hills to Carquinez Scenic Drive.

Kevin Selby of Martinez, a frequent first-place finisher at past runs, again came in first in the men’s 10k category, and Kate Manning of Walnut Creek came in first in the women’s category. Will Allan of Martinez won the men’s 5k competition, and Noreen Searls of Martinez won the women’s event.

More than 100 people volunteered to make the event a success, including dozens of students from Martinez Junior High School and Alhambra High School and many Shell refinery workers.

The Run began in 2003 with the goal of rallying the community in support of Martinez schools and promoting health and wellness. It is the hallmark community event of the Shell Martinez Refinery, which devotes staff time to organizing the event and matches all contributions. The Run also was supported by a record number of companies that donated money and in-kind contributions. The major sponsors ($1,000 or more) are:

  • PSC-Benicia
  • Shell Chemical Company
  • Delta Tech Service Inc.
  • Van De Pol Enterprises, Inc.
  • CS Marine Constructors, Inc.

The Run was preceded on Saturday evening by a fundraising Pasta Feed and silent auction, sponsored by the Martinez Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, at the Shell Clubhouse.
