13th Annual Run for Education

MARTINEZ—On your mark, get set, and run (or walk) for education! The 13th annual Shell/Martinez Education Foundation Run for Education will take place Sunday, Oct. 4, in downtown Martinez. The race will feature a 5K and 10K course along with our electronic chip timing system and the opportunity to pick up your race number and T-shirt prior to race day.

“The Run for Education gets better every year, and we are looking forward to an even greater event this year,” said Steve Lesher, Public Affairs Manager for the Shell Martinez Refinery.  “During our centennial year in 2015, we are aiming to raise $100,000 for the Martinez Education Foundation.”

All proceeds from the race go to the Martinez Education Foundation (MEF) to benefit the Martinez Unified School District (MUSD) schools. See below for information about registration, volunteer opportunities, street closures and everything else you need to know in order to participate in what promises to be a fun event and a worthy fundraiser.

Registration

It costs only $25 to pre-register for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Day-of registration costs are $30 for 5K and $35 for 10K. Registering is easy – take the online form or pick up a form at the MUSD office or Martinez Chamber of Commerce.

Race Day and Timeline

Registration and check-in on race-day will take place at Starbucks Plaza on Main Street and begins at 7:00 AM.  The Run starts at 8:30 AM.

Course

The 5K course starts at Main and Estudillo streets and goes through historic downtown Martinez. It’s great for both serious runners and leisurely walkers; groups or individual competitors. The 10K race will extend out on Carquinez Scenic Drive (Snake Road) overlooking the beautiful Carquinez Strait.

Street Closures

Note that with the added 10K, there are additional street closures this year. The following streets will be closed during the race, and we ask that residents plan for them to be closed from 8:00 AM to  11:00 AM, though it does not typically last that long.

Alhambra (between Marina Vista and Soto Street)

Marina Vista (between Berrellesa and Shell Avenue)

Soto (between Berrellesa and Alhambra)

Prizes

Top finishers in each category receive a run medal. The overall male and female winners will receive a $100 Shell gas card.

Kid Race

After the 5K, there will be the annual “kid race” for small children. Each participant will receive a ribbon.

Results

Complete results of the race will be posted in Starbucks Plaza after the awards ceremony. They will also be posted on the Martinez Education Foundation website, www.martinezedfoundation.com.

Shell Sponsorship and Proceeds

The Run for Education is the signature community project of the Shell Martinez Refinery. The refinery provides financial support, staffing, and many volunteers for the event. All proceeds benefit MUSD schools. In addition to playing the lead role in underwriting, Shell will match the first $20,000 in registrations and sponsorships. Last year, the event raised $66,000 for the MEF, which provides grants to teachers at all grade levels in the MUSD.

Family Fun Night

The Martinez Kiwanis and Rotary clubs will again be hosting their traditional pre-race Family Fun Night on Oct. 3, at the Shell Clubhouse on Pacheco Blvd. Tickets are $15 per person (current MUSD students are free with paying adult).  Pre-race packet pickup and race registration are available at the event.
